TypingMind supports voice input so you can dictate messages instead of typing them. Spoken audio is automatically transcribed into text and placed in the message input, ready to send. This is especially useful for longer prompts, hands-free workflows, or accessibility needs. TypingMind offers four speech-to-text providers:

1. Web API (free)

The Web API option uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition — no API key required.
1

Open Settings

Go to Settings in the workspace sidebar.
2

Select Voice Input

Click on the Voice Input section.
3

Choose Web API

Select Web API from the speech-to-text provider dropdown.
4

Start recording

Click the microphone icon in the message input area to begin speaking. Your speech is automatically transcribed as you talk.
The Web API uses your browser’s built-in speech recognition engine, which varies by browser. Chrome and Edge typically provide the best results. Safari and Firefox support may be limited.
Your browser will ask for microphone permission the first time you use voice input. You must grant this permission for voice input to work. If you accidentally denied it, go to your browser’s site settings and re-enable microphone access for typingmind.com.

2. OpenAI Whisper

OpenAI Whisper provides high-accuracy transcription across many languages. It requires an OpenAI API key and charges are billed to your OpenAI account based on audio duration.
1

Add your OpenAI API key

Go to your Profile → API Keys and enter your OpenAI API key. If you do not have one, create one at platform.openai.com.
2

Open Voice Input settings

Go to Settings → Voice Input.
3

Select OpenAI Whisper

Choose OpenAI Whisper from the provider dropdown.
4

Start recording

Click the microphone icon to begin dictating. Your speech is sent to the OpenAI Whisper API and transcribed.
With OpenAI Whisper, you can also upload pre-recorded audio files for transcription — for example, meeting recordings or webinars. The uploaded file must not exceed 25 MB.

3. Groq Whisper

Groq Whisper uses the Groq API to deliver fast transcriptions. You need a Groq API key.
1

Add your Groq API key

Go to Settings → Voice Input and enter your Groq API key in the Groq Whisper section.
2

Select Groq Whisper

Choose Groq Whisper from the provider dropdown.
3

Start recording

Click the microphone icon to begin dictating.
If you are using TypingMind Team, your workspace administrator can set the Groq API key in the Admin Portal’s API Keys page so individual users do not need to configure it themselves.

4. Azure Whisper

Azure Whisper is suitable for organisations already using Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI services. It requires both an Azure Whisper API key and an API endpoint.
1

Add your Azure credentials

Go to Settings → Voice Input and enter your Azure Whisper API key and API endpoint in the Azure Whisper section.
2

Select Azure Whisper

Choose Azure Whisper from the provider dropdown.
3

Start recording

Click the microphone icon to begin dictating.
If you are using TypingMind Team, your administrator can configure the Azure API key and endpoint centrally in the Admin Portal so team members do not need to set it up individually.

How to get your Azure Whisper API key and endpoint

1

Create an Azure OpenAI account

If you do not already have one, create an account at oai.azure.com.
2

Navigate to Deployments

In the Azure Portal, go to the Deployments section.
3

Create a Whisper deployment

Click Create and select a Whisper model from the model list.
4

Copy your credentials

Click on the newly created deployment to view its details. Copy the API Endpoint (Target URI) and API Key — you will need both for TypingMind.

Language support

Language support varies by provider:
  • Web API: Supports the languages recognised by your browser’s speech engine. You may be able to configure the language in your OS or browser settings.
  • OpenAI Whisper: Supports over 50 languages with high accuracy, including automatic language detection.
  • Groq Whisper: Follows Whisper model language support.
  • Azure Whisper: Follows Azure’s Whisper deployment language support.

Tips for better transcription accuracy

A headset or dedicated microphone significantly improves transcription accuracy compared to a built-in laptop mic, especially in noisy environments.
Whisper-based providers handle natural speech well, but speaking clearly and avoiding rapid speech can reduce errors.
Background noise, music, or other voices can degrade transcription quality. Use a quiet environment when possible.
Always review the transcribed text before sending. The AI cannot correct transcription errors on its own.
